Dhoop vs Incense Sticks — What's the Difference?
 
Standard incense sticks (agarbatti) are rolled around a bamboo core. As the stick burns, a portion of the fragrance comes from the bamboo itself, and the rising heat moves through the hollow core. Dhoop — also known as dhoop sticks or dhoop cones — contains no bamboo. The entire stick is compressed incense material, which means 100% of what you smell is pure Dasangam. The smoke is thicker, the fragrance is denser and longer-lasting, and the experience is closer to what happens in temple sanctums during major pujas.
 
The Temple Method
 
In the great South Indian temples — Brihadeeswarar in Thanjavur, Meenakshi Amman in Madurai, Padmanabhaswamy in Thiruvananthapuram — the incense offered to the deity during the five daily sevas is dhoop-format: thick, pure compressed incense placed on small metal stands or in censers, producing a heavy, continuous aromatic smoke that fills the entire garbhagriha (inner sanctum).
